Guwahati, August 5: The Assam Government has stepped up efforts to ensure the speedy settlement of insurance claims for families affected by the recent floods, with Chief Secretary Ravi Kota reviewing the implementation of directions issued by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for expeditious claim processing.
The review meeting brought together senior officials from the Finance Department, the Chief General Manager of the State Bank of India (SBI), the Convenor of the State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC), representatives of Acko Insurance, and other stakeholders to strengthen the institutional framework for timely claim settlement in accordance with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) guidelines.
During the meeting, officials assessed the exposure of insurance companies in the flood-affected districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat, where widespread damage was reported following the recent floods.
The discussions focused on measures to facilitate the timely assessment, processing and settlement of insurance claims under both general and special insurance categories. Officials also explored ways to simplify procedures, improve coordination among district administrations, banks and insurance providers, and ensure that affected policyholders receive compensation without unnecessary delays.
The Chief Secretary emphasised the need for a transparent, efficient and time-bound mechanism for claim settlement, stressing that flood-affected families should receive financial assistance as quickly as possible to help them recover from their losses.

Insurance companies were advised to intensify field-level assessments in the affected areas, verify claims promptly, and ensure that all genuine claims are disposed of without delay. Officials noted that faster claim settlements would provide much-needed financial relief to families rebuilding their homes, livelihoods and businesses after the floods.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of effective last-mile service delivery, improved public outreach and closer coordination between government agencies, financial institutions and insurance companies to ensure that eligible beneficiaries are not left out.
The review forms part of the Assam Government's broader post-flood rehabilitation strategy aimed at providing timely financial assistance, restoring livelihoods and strengthening support mechanisms for communities affected by the devastating floods in Upper Assam.
